Product image for XBR-85X850D

Within this article we will take a closer look at the technical specifications of the XBR-85X850D monitor from Sony. For this we will talk about all possible categories that could be relevant. To start with, we will look at the display, talk about the design and in the next section we will go into the features of the monitor. Other features such as power consumption, connectors and certifications will follow later in the text.

Display

Let's start with the size of the actual display. This information is given in inches and measures the screen diagonal of the display. It can happen that displays with the same size specification have different dimensions, since square monitors, for example, can belong to the same category as a widescreen monitor. The monitor from Sony in this article has a size of 84 inches ( 2.14 m on the diagonal). As already known, two monitors with different outer dimensions can have the same screen diagonal. In the case of the monitor XBR-85X850D , we find an aspect ratio of 1.778 to 116. This means that for every 116 pixels in height, 1.778 pixels in width are added. For comparison: A classic CRT monitor had an aspect ratio of 4:3. Approximately 92 % of the front surface of the monitor is covered by the display, while the remaining area consists of screen edges that do not allow any image output. If you want to set up several monitors next to each other, it is advisable to prefer models with the narrowest possible edges. The display is a VA panel. The panel has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 px. The pixel density is 52 ppi. The pixel pitch is 0.486 mm. The panel is illuminated by Edge LED. The built-in panel ensures stable color reproduction of the image, even at deviating viewing angles, by means of its 178 ° (horizontal) viewing angle. Sony promises stable color reproduction moreover within a 178 ° vertical angle. Vertically, however, the image renews at a minimum rate of 100 hz up to 120 hz.

Color space

The panel has a bit depth of 10 per color channel, but what does that mean? The number of bits determines how many colors can be encoded for the individual pixels of the display. For an 8-bit panel, for example, this is 256 different colors (2^8 = 256). However, since we usually display three different colors per pixel at the same time, in theory about 16 million (256^3) different colors are possible by mixing the three pixels. A 10-bit panel could even display a billion colors.

Contrast ratio

Contrast ratio is a common measurement used to represent the maximum relative differences in brightness between black and white. It describes the ability of a screen or projector to produce a high-contrast image and is the quotient of the maximum and minimum displayable luminance. The higher the values are away from each other, the stronger the quantitatively seen difference between black and white is set up, which in turn results in an improved image quality.

HDR

The monitor supports all HDR modes listed here:

  • HDR
  • HDR HLG

screen design

Sony Specifies the following dimensions for the monitor XBR-85X850D without stand/feet: 1.109 m x 1.9169999999999998 m x 7.3 cm (HxWxD)
The size of the XBR-85X850D on the desk is likely to be particularly relevant for most users. Sony specifies a space requirement of 1.182 x 1.9169999999999998 x 40.2 m (HxWxD) with the included stand. As for the weight, Sony states a total weight of 65.6 kg with stand. A wall mount should be designed for at least 60.2 kg to hold the XBR-85X850D neatly and securely. Speaking of weight without a stand and thus wall or table mounts. The monitor supports a Vesa mounting.

Rotate, tilt and swivel

The monitor from Sony cannot be rotated. The monitor cannot be swiveled. This feature could be retrofitted with a third-party stand. A tilt function was not provided by Sony with the included stand.

Ports

The monitor named ' XBR-85X850D ' has 1 RJ45 Ethernet port(s), which enables a wired network connection. This port offers users the possibility to connect the device directly to a wired network, which can be beneficial in environments with a reliable and fast internet connection.

camera

This monitor does not have a camera.

Features

  • The display/monitor supports Frame Rate Compensation.

WiFi / Bluetooth

This model ( XBR-85X850D ) supports Wi-Fi. This wireless network connection allows devices to display content from a smartphone or tablet, for example, or to download apps from an app store, similar to TVs. However, monitors usually do not have this functionality because they are only operated in connection with a notebook or PC. The protocols are supported: WiFi 802.11a WiFi 802.11ac WiFi 802.11b WiFi 802.11g WiFi 802.11n
Wi-Fi Direct is supported by XBR-85X850D , which is a standard for data transfer between two WLAN devices without a central wireless access point. This functionality makes it possible, for example, to send and display pictures and videos directly to the monitor without a Wi-Fi connection to the router. The XBR-85X850D supports Bluetooth.

Power consumption

The maximum power consumption (peak) specified for this monitor is 273 w. In standby mode, the device consumes approximately 0.5 w. The monitor can be operated on a 110v power supply. The power grid has to supply a frequency of 50 hz to 60 hz.

Environment

The monitor has a built-in ambient light sensor, which can be used, for example, to dynamically adjust the brightness of the monitor to the ambient conditions. For temperature, the maximum permissible ambient temperature is 40 °C. Below a temperature of 0 °C , the monitor from Sony should again not be used. The humidity must not exceed 80 percent. At least, however, 10 percent humidity.
