Display, power consumption, dimensions, technologies used, connections, certifications, comfort features. All these keywords can be relevant for a purchase decision, but an exact comparison is often difficult. For this reason, we will summarize as many of the mentioned specifications as possible in an understandable form in the course of this article. Let's start with the most important component of the XBR-55A8F from Sony.
Display
Texts, videos and/or other applications can be displayed on the 54 inches ( 1.3880000000000001 m on the diagonal) of the monitor. As already mentioned or known, monitors have a certain number of pixels in height and width. In most cases, this is not a 1:1 ratio, which is also the case with the monitor from Sony. This monitor has an aspect ratio of 1.778 : 116. This means that every 1.778 pixels in width 116 pixels in height are added. In addition to the aspect ratios and the specified screen diagonal, the ratio between the monitor surface and the actual display could also be relevant for some enthusiasts. This ratio represents the general relationship between non-display and display. In other words: Approximately 94.3 % of the front surface of the monitor consists of the display, while the remaining percent consists of screen edges and is not suitable for image reproduction. If you want to place several monitors next to each other, you should make sure you choose models with the narrowest possible edges. The display is a OLED panel. The panel has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 px. The pixel density is 81 ppi. The pixel pitch is 0.315 mm. The continuous possible brightness specified by the manufacturer Sony is 300 nt. The maximum brightness of the monitor is 800 nt on the panel. The built-in panel ensures stable color reproduction of the image, even at deviating viewing angles, by means of its 178 ° (horizontal) viewing angle. Sony promises stable color reproduction moreover within a 178 ° vertical angle. Vertically, however, the image renews at a minimum rate of 100 hz up to 120 hz. The minimum response time of the monitor is ms.
Color space
The panel has a bit depth of 10 per color channel, but what does that mean? The number of bits determines how many colors can be encoded for the individual pixels of the display. For an 8-bit panel, for example, this is 256 different colors (2^8 = 256). However, since we usually display three different colors per pixel at the same time, in theory about 16 million (256^3) different colors are possible by mixing the three pixels. A 10-bit panel could even display a billion colors. According to the manufacturer, the coverage of the DCI-P3 color space is 99 %. The REC 2020 color space is covered to 76 %.
Contrast ratio
Contrast ratio is a common measurement used to represent the maximum relative differences in brightness between black and white. It describes the ability of a screen or projector to produce a high-contrast image and is the quotient of the maximum and minimum displayable luminance. The higher the values are away from each other, the stronger the quantitatively seen difference between black and white is set up, which in turn results in an improved image quality.
HDR
The monitor supports all HDR modes listed here:
- HDR 10
- HDR HLG
- Dolby Vision
screen design
Sony Specifies the following dimensions for the monitor XBR-55A8F without stand/feet: 71.2 cm x 1.226 m x 5.5 cm (HxWxD)
The size of the monitor (stand included) is 71.7 x 1.226 x 25.5 m (HxWxD). As for the weight, Sony states a total weight of 22.2 kg with stand. Without stand, the monitor weighs 18.7 kg. Speaking of weight without a stand and thus wall or table mounts. The monitor supports a Vesa mounting.
Rotate, tilt and swivel
The monitor from Sony cannot be rotated. The monitor cannot be swiveled. This feature could be retrofitted with a third-party stand. A tilt function was not provided by Sony with the included stand.
Ports
With the built-in 1 RJ45 Ethernet port(s) on the ' XBR-55A8F ' monitor, users can establish a wired network connection. This feature provides a stable connectivity option for those who need a reliable network connection, whether for professional tasks or mission-critical applications.
camera
This monitor does not have a camera.
Loudspeaker
The monitor has an integrated subwoofer. In total, the subwoofer consists of 1 driver(s). Each of the built-in drivers has a capacity of 10 w.
Features
WiFi / Bluetooth
This model ( XBR-55A8F ) supports Wi-Fi. This wireless network connection allows devices to display content from a smartphone or tablet, for example, or to download apps from an app store, similar to TVs. However, monitors usually do not have this functionality because they are only operated in connection with a notebook or PC. The protocols are supported:
Wi-Fi Direct is supported by XBR-55A8F , which is a standard for data transfer between two WLAN devices without a central wireless access point. This functionality makes it possible, for example, to send and display pictures and videos directly to the monitor without a Wi-Fi connection to the router. The XBR-55A8F supports Bluetooth.
Power consumption
The maximum power consumption (peak) specified for this monitor is 371 w. In standby mode, the device consumes approximately 0.5 w. In ECO mode, the monitor consumes 100 w. The monitor can be operated on a 110v power supply. The power grid has to supply a frequency of 50 hz to 60 hz.
Environment
The monitor has a built-in ambient light sensor, which can be used, for example, to dynamically adjust the brightness of the monitor to the ambient conditions. During operation, the ambient temperature must not exceed 40 °C , to ensure full functionality. Below a temperature of 0 °C , the monitor from Sony should again not be used. The humidity must not exceed 80 percent. At least, however, 10 percent humidity.
