Today we will look at the monitor 34in Dark Matter from Monoprice from the year 2020. Within this article, we will first take a closer look at the most important feature of a monitor -the display-, then the design, and in the next section we will go into the features of the monitor. Of course, power consumption, certifications, connectivity and other important details will also be considered.

Display

Any multimedia content can be displayed on 34 inches ( 86.4 cm on the diagonal). As already mentioned or known, monitors have a certain number of pixels in height and width. In most cases, this is not a 1:1 ratio, which is also the case with the monitor from Monoprice. This monitor has an aspect ratio of 2.389 : 1. This means that every 2.389 pixels in width 1 pixels in height are added. Approximately 95.8 % of the front surface of the monitor is covered by the display, while the remaining area consists of screen edges that do not allow any image output. If you want to set up several monitors next to each other, it is advisable to prefer models with the narrowest possible edges. The display is a VA panel. The panel has a resolution of 3440 x 1440 px. The pixel density is 109 ppi. The pixel pitch is 0.232 mm. The monitor's panel is characterized by its luminosity of 400 nt. The panel is illuminated by W-LED. The built-in panel ensures stable color reproduction of the image, even at deviating viewing angles, by means of its 178 ° (horizontal) viewing angle. Monoprice promises stable color reproduction moreover within a 178 ° vertical angle. Vertically, however, the image renews at a minimum rate of 48 hz up to 144 hz. The minimum response time of the monitor is ms. The display panel is Anti-glare/Matte (3H).

Color space

The panel has a bit depth of 10 per color channel, but what does that mean? The number of bits determines how many colors can be encoded for the individual pixels of the display. For an 8-bit panel, for example, this is 256 different colors (2^8 = 256). However, since we usually display three different colors per pixel at the same time, in theory about 16 million (256^3) different colors are possible by mixing the three pixels. A 10-bit panel could even display a billion colors. The coverage of the Adobe RGB 1998 color space is 85 % according to the manufacturer. According to the manufacturer, the coverage of the DCI-P3 color space is 90 %. According to the manufacturer, the coverage of the NTSC 1953 color space is 85 %. According to the manufacturer, the coverage of the SRGB color space is 99 %.

Contrast ratio

Contrast ratio is a common measurement used to represent the maximum relative differences in brightness between black and white. It describes the ability of a screen or projector to produce a high-contrast image and is the quotient of the maximum and minimum displayable luminance. The higher the values are away from each other, the stronger the quantitatively seen difference between black and white is set up, which in turn results in an improved image quality. This monitor from Monoprice has a static contrast ratio of 3000 : 1 , according to the manufacturer.

HDR

The monitor supports all HDR modes listed here:

  • HDR 400

screen design

For the installation of the monitor, a space requirement of approximately 34.3 cm in height, 80.9 cm in width and 12.3 cm in depth is to be assumed.
The size of the 34in Dark Matter on the desk is likely to be particularly relevant for most users. Monoprice specifies a space requirement of 45.4 x 80.9 x 22.6 cm (HxWxD) with the included stand. The device weighs in total (i.e. also measured with the stand) 7 kg.

Curved

The 34in Dark Matter is a curved monitor with a curvature of 1.5 m

Rotate, tilt and swivel

The monitor from Monoprice cannot be rotated. The monitor cannot be swiveled. This feature could be retrofitted with a third-party stand. The tilt of the monitor 34in Dark Matter can be individually adjusted to optimize the viewing angle and increase comfort during use. The angle of inclination to the rear is 15. The monitor can be tilted forward by 5 degree.

Features

  • AMD FreeSync: By dynamically synchronizing the refresh rate of the 34in Dark Matter with the frame rate, AMD FreeSync minimizes judder and ensures smooth and enjoyable gameplay.
  • Picture in Picture mode
  • The display/monitor supports Frame Rate Compensation.

Panel manufacturer

Many manufacturers of monitors and TVs fall back on third-party manufacturers, such as Samsung or LG, when choosing the actual display (panel). Thus, many of the monitors have the same panel and, conversely, differ only in their design, additional functionalities, the software used and, of course, the price. Two monitors from Monoprice or another manufacturer with an identical panel do not necessarily have to have the same picture quality, but it is usually a first indicator for a purchase decision. The panel used here is originally from Samsung and has the model number LSM340YP05.

WiFi / Bluetooth

Power consumption

The average consumption was given by Monoprice as 54 w. The maximum power consumption (peak) specified for this monitor is 80 w. In standby mode, the device consumes approximately 0.5 w. When switched off, on the other hand, the monitor consumes only 0.5 w. The monitor can be operated on a 110v power supply. The monitor can be operated on a 220v power supply. There are 2 amps specified. The power grid has to supply a frequency of 50 hz to 60 hz.

Environment

During operation, the ambient temperature must not exceed 40 °C , to ensure full functionality. Below a temperature of 0 °C , the monitor from Monoprice should again not be used. The maximum storage temperature should be according to Monoprice 60 °C. Minimal were given by Monoprice -20 °C.
