Today we will look at the monitor 27QN880 from LG from the year 2020. Within this article, we will first take a closer look at the most important feature of a monitor -the display-, then the design, and in the next section we will go into the features of the monitor. Of course, power consumption, certifications, connectivity and other important details will also be considered.
Display
Let's start with the size of the actual display. This is given in inches and measures the screen diagonal of the display. The monitor 27QN880 has a display size of 27 inches ( 68.5 cm on the diagonal). It should be noted, however, that displays in this category can have different dimensions, since square monitors, for example, can have the same diagonal as a widescreen monitor. The size specification of a monitor refers to the screen diagonal, which is usually specified in inches. It is only comparable to a limited extent for different formats. For example, a conventional 4:3 monitor with the same screen diagonal has 6% less width, but 13% more height and a total of 7% more surface area than a monitor in 16:10 format. Despite the difference in working area, wider monitors are better suited for consuming games or current movies, for example. It is also easier to display several documents simultaneously on widescreen monitors. So, it depends on the current use case whether the aspect ratio of 1.778 : 1 makes sense for the intended use case. In addition to the aspect ratios and the specified screen diagonal, the ratio between the monitor surface and the actual display could also be relevant for some enthusiasts. This ratio represents the general relationship between non-display and display. In other words: Approximately 90.1 % of the front surface of the monitor consists of the display, while the remaining percent consists of screen edges and is not suitable for image reproduction. If you want to place several monitors next to each other, you should make sure you choose models with the narrowest possible edges. The display is a IPS panel. The panel has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 px. The pixel density is 108 ppi. The pixel pitch is 0.233 mm. The continuous possible brightness specified by the manufacturer LG is 350 nt. The panel is illuminated by W-LED. The built-in panel ensures stable color reproduction of the image, even at deviating viewing angles, by means of its 178 ° (horizontal) viewing angle. LG promises stable color reproduction moreover within a 178 ° vertical angle. Vertically, however, the image renews at a minimum rate of 48 hz up to 75 hz. The minimum response time of the monitor is ms. The display panel is Anti-glare/Matte (3H).
Color space
The panel has a bit depth of 8 per color channel, but what does that mean? The number of bits determines how many colors can be encoded for the individual pixels of the display. For an 8-bit panel, for example, this is 256 different colors (2^8 = 256). However, since we usually display three different colors per pixel at the same time, in theory about 16 million (256^3) different colors are possible by mixing the three pixels. A 10-bit panel could even display a billion colors.
Contrast ratio
Contrast ratio is a common measurement used to represent the maximum relative differences in brightness between black and white. It describes the ability of a screen or projector to produce a high-contrast image and is the quotient of the maximum and minimum displayable luminance. The higher the values are away from each other, the stronger the quantitatively seen difference between black and white is set up, which in turn results in an improved image quality. This monitor from LG has a static contrast ratio of 1000 : 1 , according to the manufacturer.

The size of the 27QN880 on the desk is likely to be particularly relevant for most users. LG specifies a space requirement of 48.3 x 61.3 x 40.4 cm (HxWxD) with the included stand. The device weighs in total (i.e. also measured with the stand) 8.7 kg. Without stand, the monitor weighs 4.8 kg. A height-adjustable stand ensures an improved ergonomic posture during use. The monitor can be moved to a maximum height of 13 cm. This value is always measured from the bottom edge of the screen.
Rotate, tilt and swivel
The monitor from LG has a pivot function and can thus be rotated using the included stand. A rotation to the left is possible with up to 90 degree. To the right, the monitor can be rotated by 90 degree. The 27QN880 can be swiveled when mounted on the included stand. Pivoting to the left is possible up to 280 degree. Pivoting to the right is possible up to 280 degree. Thanks to the tilt function of the 27QN880 monitor, the screen position can be flexibly adjusted to minimize dazzling light sources and ensure optimum visibility. The angle of inclination to the rear is 25. The monitor can be tilted forward by 25 degree.

This mode can combine different settings on your monitor to provide a better picture and therefore an improved gaming experience. The Adaptive Sync feature of the 27QN880 dynamically varies the monitor's refresh rate and responds to the game's required frame rates. The monitor from LG supports the reduction of artifacts within dark image areas, which are caused by compression of the played video files, for example. Depending on the manufacturer, this technology is called Black Boost, Dark Boost, Black Stabilizer, Black Equalizer or Black Enhancement.

On average, the monitor consumes approximately 40 w. The maximum power consumption (peak) specified for this monitor is 130 w. In standby mode, the device consumes approximately 0.5 w. When switched off, on the other hand, the monitor consumes only 0.3 w. Generally, these values should be taken with a grain of salt, since the power consumption is highly dependent on the current conditions. A monitor usually consumes much more power in bright scenes with a high refresh rate than in dark still pictures. In addition, the 27QN880 has a (smart) energy-saving mode, which is supposed to ensure a lower average power consumption. In ECO mode, the monitor consumes 30 w. For temperature, the maximum permissible ambient temperature is 40 °C. Below a temperature of 0 °C , the monitor from LG should again not be used. The humidity must not exceed 80 percent. At least, however, 10 percent humidity. The monitor may be stored at a maximum humidity of 85 percent. The minimum humidity during storage should not fall below 5 percent. The maximum storage temperature should be according to LG 60 °C. Minimal were given by LG -20 °C.
